UNM Drops Saturday Games at UNT Invite

by Allison Weiss

DENTON, Texas— The Lobos dropped both games of the UNT Invite on Saturday, losing the first game to Stephen F. Austin and later to North Texas in extra innings.

GAME 1: SFA 13, UNM 1 (5)
SFA took a 7-0 lead in the first on six hits and the Lobos were never able to recover, with the Lumberjacks adding five runs in the second and a final run in the third.

As the designated visitors, the Lobos had an opportunity to answer in the top of the second with their first three batters of the inning reaching base on a Chloe Yeatts single followed by a single down the third base line by Emma Bramson and a full-count walk by Elizabeth Baylor. However, a popup and double play ended the chance.

The Lobos strung together a run on two hits in the fourth to get on the scoreboard as Bramson singled to left and Baylor singled up the middle with Bramson advancing all the way to third on the play. A ground ball to second during Karly Smith’s at-bat allowed Bramson to score before the inning came to an end with a runner left on.

UNM tallied seven hits in the game, led by two hits apiece from Rachael Hathoot and Bramson, and left five runners on.

New Mexico utilized three pitchers in the game with starter McKenna Guest facing four batters before being replaced by Emily Brouse. Brouse went 1.2 innings before Brooke Umali made her Lobo debut, finishing the final 2.1 innings and striking out two, allowing one run on two hits and walked two.

GAME 2: UNT 1, UNM 0 (8)
The Lobos returned to the field to face host North Texas to close the day, needing eight innings to settle the contest that had three hits.

Taylor Snow pitched her second complete game of the weekend, going a career-high 7.1 innings, striking out two and not allowing a walk on 25 batters faced. The lone run came in the eighth inning after a runner was placed on second to start the inning and a double drove in the game-ending run.

Snow and the Lobo defense retired the side in order in the first, third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings with just one runner reaching base but left stranded in both the second and sixth innings.

For the Lobos, DeNae Vasquez-Dickson was the first Lobo to reach on a one-out walk in the fourth inning, with UNM drawing another walk in the fifth inning with Keyannah Chavez reaching. However, both times, the Lobos were kept off the board.

Heading to extra innings, Katherine Brunner was placed on second with Bramson bunting her over before a strikeout and lineout ended the top of the eighth. Faced with a Mean Green runner on second, Snow got the first out on a liner to left field before a double to right center scored the winning run.
