161 Lobos Named MW Scholar-Athletes

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— For an 11th consecutive year, The University of New Mexico recorded over 100 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete honorees as UNM had 161 honorees for the 2022-23 academic year. The 11 in program history, behind the 187 during the 2020-21 COVID season when the eligibility rules were different.

Lobo baseball had a program record 19 honorees as did women’s track & field with 33 and men’s track & field with 20. Softball was a fourth team to establish a program record, recording 12 honorees.

The MW Scholar-Athlete award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in a Mountain West-sponsored sport.

Baseball, men’s golf, women’s golf and women’s tennis all led the league or tied for the repective sports’ lead in honorees.Men’s tennis, men’s track & field, women’s soccer and women’s track & field all finished in the top three in their respective sports.
