Men's Tennis Has Four Named to CSC Academic All-District Team

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –— College Sports Communicators have announced the 2023 Men’s Tennis CSC Academic All-District teams, and the Lobos had four players earn honors for the first time.  Arda Azkara, Alex Maggs, Aram Noroozian and Georgio Samaha were all named to the squad. All now advance to the national ballot for potential All-America status.  The Lobos were the 2023 Mountain West champions, winning a third regular season title in the last four seasons.

Azkara, a sophomore from Ismet, Turkey, was the Mountain West Player of the Year, going 11-0 in Mountain West singles and doubles.  He was named All-Mountain West in singles and doubles, and he was a four-time Mountain West Player of the Week. He went 17-8 in singles (15-5 at No. 1 in the spring) and 11-7 in doubles (7-4 at No. 1) and in his entire two-year career at UNM, the sophomore has never lost a No. 1 match at home (19-0).

Maggs, a senior from Birmingham, England, was named All-Mountain West in doubles (played No. 1), going 16-10 (team lead for wins), and 5-0 in MW play at No. 1.  Additionally he went 13-4 in singles, mostly at No. 6, going 8-1 in dual match singles play in 2022-23.

Noroozian, a sophomore from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, play both No. 2 and No. 3 singles, going 21-11, and went 9-14 in doubles, earning All-Mountain West honors in singles.  He won 15 of his final 18 matches in singles and was second on the team with 21 wins.  He went 5-0 in MW play in singles.

Samaha, a sophomore from Albuquerque, N.M., led the team with 25 wins, going 25-8.  He went 9-1 at No. 5 singles and 8-1 at No. 6 singles, winning 16 of his final 18 matches.  He went 4-1 in MW play in singles and overall went 10-17 in doubles, but 8-10 in the dual season.  His 35 total combined victories led the team. 

Azkara is majoring in business and has a 3.64 GPA.  Maggs in majoring in business and has graduated with a 4.03 GPA, and will work on a Master’s degree next season.  Noroozian is majoring in business and has a 3.55 GPA, and Samaha is majoring in civil engineering with a 3.79 GPA.
