Lobos Lose Lead Late to UNLV Friday

by Allison Weiss

LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The Lobos hit two, two-run home runs in Friday’s game at UNLV to take a 5-2 lead before the Rebels answered with two runs in both the fifth and sixth for the 6-5 final.

Ashley Archuleta opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the first after Keyannah Chavez reached on a single to left center. However, UNLV matched it in the home half of the inning, taking advantage of an error that allowed two runners to move into scoring position and a single up the middle that brought both in.

After a scoreless second and third, UNM reclaimed the lead in the fourth with Peyton Robinson coming around to score from second on a throwing error by the Rebel shortstop and added to its lead with two more runs in the fifth off of a pinch-hit two-run home run by Lauren Garcia, her third of the season.

Much like the first inning, UNLV scored two in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly and a fielding error to make it 5-4 UNM and the Rebels took their first lead of the game with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Lobos registered eight hits in the game, led by Robinson’s three hits, while Archuleta and Garcia each had two RBI.

UNM used two arms in the circle with Amber Linton starting and going 5.1 innings with four strikeouts before Taylor Snow entered in relief and retired both batters she faced, striking out one.

The Lobos conclude the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.
