Lobos Get Passing Grade in APR Again

by Frank Mercogliano

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — For the 13th consecutive year, The University of New Mexico had every sport pass the NCAA Academic Progress Rate Institutional Report.  The reports were released publicly by the NCAA.  This year’s report, which is the 2021-22 report, saw 13 of UNM’s 16 sports equal or better last year’s four-year rolling score.

UNM sponsors 18 sports, but for APR purposes, indoor and outdoor track are combined.

The Lobos had a pair of programs record perfect scores of 1,000 over the four-year rolling period with men’s cross country and women’s golf.  Seven programs recorded a perfect 1,000 for the 2021-22 single year; baseball, men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s track and field, women’s track and field, women’s golf and softball.

The highest four-year APR jumps were recorded by men’s cross country, which saw an 22-point improvement to a 1000, with baseball jumping 18 points and football 12.  Men’s track and field and women’s softball each moved up 10 points.

APR data for the 2021-22 report is a four-year rolling score that include APR data from 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22.

APR is a combination of eligibility and retention scores.  For each semester, a student-athlete can account for two points, one for returning to school, and one for being eligible.   The total points accumulated is divided by the total points possible, and then multiplied by 1000 to get the raw score.

This is the 17th year of that APR scores have been issued.  One of the keys to UNM’s APR success is the Lobo Center for Student-Athlete Success, which houses UNM’s athletic academic advisors, who oversee the academic progress of UNM’s student-athletes.  The LCSAS has three complete computer labs, meeting and private study spaces, classroom, and tutoring stations as well as housing UNM’s Student Success Staff.
