Lobos Drop Game One to Aztecs

by Allison Weiss

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Friday night’s game against the Aztecs was scoreless through the first three innings before SDSU scored one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead in the eventual 4-1 final. UNM scored its run in the top of the seventh and had a chance to cut into the lead after having the bases loaded in the seventh, but a strikeout ended the game.

The Lobos finished with three hits, with Peyton Robinson getting UNM’s first hit in the top of the fourth, and Rachael Hathoot hitting her eighth double of the season to start the seventh. Ashley Archuleta drove in Hathoot on a single to the shortstop two at-bats later to score UNM’s lone run. Leslie Romero drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate, and after a popup recorded the second out, Keyannah Chavez drew another walk after being down 0-2 in the count to load the bases. A strikeout however ended the game.

SDSU had a runner reach third in the first and third innings but each time Lobo starter Taylor Snow and the Lobo defense got out of the inning.

A single up the middle, a stolen base and a throwing error to third allowed the first Aztec run to score and a double with runners on second and third added two more runs in the fifth. San Diego State added a final run in the sixth on a walk, stolen base and throwing error that allowed the runner to take third before a sacrifice fly allowed the runner to tag from third.

Snow went 4.0n innings in the circle and allowed one run (unearned) on four hits before Amber Linton entered in relief to pitch the final 2.0 innings.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 4 p.m. PT/ 5 p.m. MT.
