Women's Tennis Looks To Continue Hot Streak

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Lobos women’s tennis team is on a pretty good roll, and they have moved from last place to fifth and into a position to earn a bye in the opening round of the Mountain West Tournament.  The winners of three straight will look to stay hot with a weekend set in San Jose, facing off with the Spartans on Saturday at 3 pm Mountain Time and then Nevada on Sunday at 11 am Mountain Time.

There will be live scoring for both days, but no live video.

The Lobos have won three straight matches, starting with a 4-3 win over then No. 64 Fresno State.  Last weekend, UNM picked up back-to-back 4-1 wins over Utah State and Boise State, moving UNM to 3-3 overall and putting them in a tie for fifth place with Fresno State, a team UNM beat head-to-head.

The Lobos, who are sitting just outside the Top 75, are 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.  San Jose State, playing at home, is 7-10 overall and 2-4 in the league, one of four teams in a massive logjam in a tie for seventh.  One of the other teams?  Nevada, which is 7-7 and likewise 2-4.  UNM is looking for its first win against San Jose State since 2015.

The Lobos continue to start strong in doubles, as UNM is 31-8 in doubles in the spring, and a solid 42-26 in singles.
