Azkara Earns Third Career MW Player of the Week Honor

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — For the second time this year, and the third time in his career, Arda Azkara was named the Mountain West Player of the Week, earning the honor after helping UNM to a 2-1 record last week.

The sophomore from Ismet, Turkey, who was named the Mountain West Player of the Week on January 25, went 2-1 in singles on the week.  He maintiained his perfect career home record at No. 1 singles with a come-from-behind 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 74 Drake’s Jeremy Schifris.

His biggest win however was on Saturday when, with UNM’s match with Radford tied 3-3, he got a service break in the 12th and final game of the third set for a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win over Demis Taramonlis, giving UNM a 4-3 win.

Azkara’s five-match winning streak ended on Sunday, but overall he is 10-7 overall and 8-4 in spring matches.  The Lobos travel to face Denver on Saturday at 1:30 pm.
