Lobo Classic Returns to The Pit Friday-Sunday

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s basketball team returns to action this weekend with the Lobo Classic, the first in-season tournament at The Pit since 2007-08. This year’s Lobo Classic features four schools, New Mexico, Jacksonville State, North Dakota State and Northern Colorado, playing a round-robin tournament with each team playing each of the others over three consecutive days.

The tournament begins on Friday with the Lobos hosting Jacksonville State at 5 p.m., followed by North Dakota State and Northern Colorado at 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s action starts at 5 p.m. with UNM vs. NDSU, followed at 7:30 p.m. by JSU vs. UNC. Sunday’s play starts at 3 p.m. with JSU vs. NDSU, with the tournament concluding with UNM vs. UNC.

The three UNM games in the tournament will be streamed on the Mountain West Network. Friday’s radio broadcast of the Lobo game will be on KNML (due to conflict with UNM football), with the Saturday and Sunday UNM games on KKOB.

Tickets for each day begin at $15 and include both games of that day’s doubleheader. Fans can contribute to the Lobo Food Pantry throughout the weekend and can get $10 tickets for their family with a donation of two non-perishable food items.

The Lobos (3-0) return to action on Friday for the first time since an 84-63 victory at SMU on Nov. 15, UNM’s largest margin of victory on the road in five seasons. Josiah Allick and Jaelen House each had 18 points to lead New Mexico. House (20.7 ppg) and Jamal Mashburn, Jr. (18.7 ppg) rank first and third in scoring in the Mountain West.

This year’s tournament is the 12th edition of the Lobo Classic, an event that originally was held at The Pit from 1988-99. The Lobos won the event in nine of the 11 previous editions of the tournament.
