Women's Tennis Goes 7-3 On Day Two at UTEP

EL PASO, Texas — The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team continued its hot play, going 7-3 in singles and doubles on Day 2 of the UTEP Invitational after going 7-0 in singles and doubles yesterday. Overall, UNM ran its record to 14-3 in the tournament, includng 5-0 in doubles.
In doubles, UNM’s team of Katherine Jhang and Leonie Hoppe beat Lisa Zhu and Anna Pinaieva 6-3 after arriving late last night from the ITA National Championships where they finished in the Round of 16. UNM also got wins from Hsuan Huang and Maud Vandeputte, who won 6-4 over Bella Nguyen and Miranda Bishard and from Sarah O’Connor and Maria Sodre, who won 6-2 over Natsuki Nishimura and Georgia Townsend, all of New Mexico State.
In singles, Vandeputte won over Bishard 6-1, 6-0, Hoppe won over Nguyen 6-2, 6-0 and Sofia Taborga was a 6-3, 7-6 winner over Dora Kurdi. The lone three-setter was won by Maria Sodre, who took a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win over Melissa Cartis. UNM suffered three losses as Zhu beat Jhang 6-3, 6-2, Pinaieva beat Huang 6-4, 6-3, and Nishimura won over O’Connor 6-2, 6-3.
