Lobos Take Six of Nine on Day One of Denver Hidden Duals

DENVER, Colo.  — The New Mexico Lobos, fresh off a terrific showing at the Lobo-hosted ITA Regional Championships, continued it’s hot play, taking six of nine matches on day 1 of the Denver Hidden Duals, hosted at the Denver Tennis Center.

UNM took five singles matches and one doubles match on the day of the nine played.  UNM’s lone doubles win was by Ryomo Matsushita and Daniil Kakhniuk, who won 6-2 over J.W. Altman and Wikus Robbertse.  Alex Maggs and Jan Pucalka nearly snuck one out, losing 7-6 (7-5) to Andreas Kraner and Valentino De Pellegrin.  Rafael Abdulsalam and Georgio Samaha lost 6-4 to Ege Cankus and Hiroki Fujita.

In singles play, the Lobos snagged five our of six matches, four of which went straight sets.  Abdulsalam was the lone winner to go three sets, winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 over Kraner.  Aram Noroozian, who didn’t play a doubles match, won 7-5, 6-3 over Robbertse.  Samaha and Kakhniuk won identical 7-5, 6-2 decisions over Cankus and Altman, respectively, and Matsushita won 6-2, 6-2 over Fujita.

The only singles loss was a De Pellegrin win over Pucalka 6-3, 6-2.

UNM continues at the Hidden Duals tomorrow and Sunday.
