Lobos Earn 1-0 Victory Over UNLV

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s soccer team remained unbeaten on its four-game homestand with a 1-0 victory over UNLV Thursday night at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos improve to 5-3-6 overall (3-1-3 MW) with the win, while the Rebels fall to 3-9-3 (1-3-3 MW).

Leilani Baker scored her fifth goal of the season just after halftime to lift the Lobos to the win, while Alli Davis recorded her third career shutout in goal.

The Lobos controlled play and had the majority of chances in the first half, but the game remained scoreless through the opening 45 minutes. New Mexico held a 13-3 edge in shots in the first half, but couldn’t convert that advantage into a lead.

The Lobos took little time taking the lead in the second half. In the 47th minute, Baker scored off a cross from Sophia Roberts for her team-leading third goal in conference play. New Mexico continued to pressure throughout the rest of the game, but Baker’s tally would be the lone goal of the contest.

New Mexico outshot UNLV 22-9 overall and 8-5 in shots on goal, while holding a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Davis made five saves in goal for UNM to earn the shutout.

“I was incredibly proud of our effort tonight,” said UNM head coach Heather Dyche. “I thought for 70 minutes of that game, that was the best we have played all year. We had good energy and composure, and moved the ball well. I was really pleased with the team tonight and happy to get a win.”

The Lobos conclude their four-game homestand on Sunday when they host Nevada. Game time at the UNM Soccer Complex is 1:00 p.m.
