Lobos Defeat Air Force 2-0 for First Mountain West Win

USAFA, Colo. – The New Mexico women’s soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to five games with its first conference win of the season, defeating Air Force 2-0 Thursday night at the Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Lobos (3-2-5, 1-0-2 MW) used a pair of second half goals to record their first Mountain West win and snap the Falcons’ (4-4-2, 1-1-1 MW) three-game unbeaten streak.

Jadyn Edwards had a goal and an assist to lead the Lobos, while Zaria Katesigwa added a goal for New Mexico. Alli Davis recorded her second shutout of the season in goal for UNM.

The first half was a defensive battle, with the teams combining for just one shot on goal over the first 45 minutes of play. In the second half, the Lobos scored twice in a seven-minute span to take control of the game.

In the 72nd minute Edwards stole the ball near the corner of the box, dribbled around several defenders before curling a shot under the crossbar for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. In the 79th minute, Edwards took curled a ball to the far post off a free kick that found Katesigwa, who tapped the ball past the keeper for her second goal of the season.

Each team recorded 14 shots in the contest, while the Lobos had a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Davis made one save in goal to post the shutout for UNM.

“I was really happy for our team to get two great goals tonight and find a win,” said UNM head coach Heather Dyche. “They’ve been really committed to the process and this was a tough one against a good Air Force team.”

The Lobos will conclude their two-game road trip to Colorado Springs on Sunday with a visit to Colorado College. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
