Lobos Earn 1-1 Draw at Wyoming in Mountain West Opener

by Steve Kirkland

LARAMIE, Wyo. – The New Mexico women’s soccer team opened conference play Thursday with a 1-1 draw at Wyoming on a windy afternoon at the Madrid Sports Complex. The Lobos (2-2-4, 0-0-1 MW) and Cowgirls (1-3-4, 0-0-1 MW) traded goals midway through the second half to play to a tie in the Mountain West opener for both teams.

Jaelyn Hendren scored her first goal of the season for the Lobos in the 66th minute to level the match after Wyoming had taken the lead just six minutes earlier. The result runs UNM’s unbeaten streak to three games and its Mountain West unbeaten streak to seven games, dating back to last season.

The teams played a scoreless first half in which each team was unable to take advantage of their chances. The Lobos had five corner kicks and several free kicks in the attacking end, but were not able to capitalize, while the Cowgirls shot wide on several of their best chances of the half.

In the second half, after Wyoming had several early chances, the Lobos nearly took the lead in the 55th minute when a Karlee Maes free kick from distance hit the crossbar. The Cowgirls took the lead in the 60th minute when Alyssa Bedard headed in a free kick delivered into box. New Mexico drew even six minutes later when Zaria Katesigwa got behind the defense and found Hendren open to fire home a shot just inside the far post. Late in the game, Maes’ header off the Lobos’ eighth corner of the day just missed the upper corner, which would have been the game-winner.

Wyoming outshot New Mexico 13-8 in the contest, while the Lobos had an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Alli Davis made five saves in goal for New Mexico.

“A point on the road in Laramie has always been difficult,” said UNM head coach Heather Dyche. “Wyoming played really hard tonight and it was a great game to be a part of. We are looking forward to coming back home to Albuquerque and playing in front of our fans.”

The Lobos return home Sunday to open the home portion of their Mountain West schedule. Game time is 1 p.m. and it is Childhood Cancer Awareness Day at the UNM Soccer Complex.
