by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s soccer team begins Mountain West play Thursday afternoon with a visit to Wyoming. The Lobos and Cowgirls will kick-off at 4:00 p.m. MT at the Madrid Sports Complex in a game that will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.

The Lobos (2-2-3), the reigning Mountain West champions, open conference play after an 11-day break following the end of their non-conference schedule. New Mexico was last in action on Sept. 11 with a 2-2 tie at UC Riverside, where UNM scored twice in the final 11 minutes to erase a two-goal deficit. Jadyn Edwards leads the Lobos in scoring with six goals this season, second-most in the conference.

The Cowgirls (1-3-3) enter Mountain West play after a 1-1 draw with St. Thomas in their only game over the past two weeks. Jamie Tatum ranks fourth in the conference with four goals this season.

New Mexico is 15-3-3 all-time in Mountain West openers, including a 5-2-0 in openers during the Heather Dyche era. The Lobos have won the conference opener by a 4-1 score in each of the last two years, including a home win over Wyoming last season.

The Lobos lead the all-time series 20-8-6, including a 7-3-3 in Laramie. UNM has won the last five overall meetings and the last three road trips to Wyoming.

New Mexico will return home Sunday to host Colorado State. Game time is 1 p.m. and the game will be the Lobos’ Childhood Cancer Awareness Day.
