Lobo Soccer Ends Preseason with 4-0 Exhibition Win over West Texas A&M

by Alma Solis

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico soccer team ended its preseason with a 4-0 win in an exhibition against West Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon at Robertson Field.

This exhibition matchup proved to be more level of a competition than the Lobos’ exhibition against Fort Lewis College this past Wednesday. The Buffs were able to keep the Lobos at bay for the majority of the first 30 minutes. New Mexico got on the board with a goal by Leilani Baker, assisted by Jadyn Edwards, in the 28th minute, shortly before the end of the first period.

The Lobos added on to their lead in the second 30-minute period, tacking on two more goals right after each other in the 43rd and 46th minutes. In the 43rd minute, Dalis Bruce found the back of the net off an assist from Sakura Yoshida to give the Lobos a 2-0 lead. Shortly after, Yoshida once again set up her teammate Edwards to score in the 46th minute and put the Lobos up by three.

Neither team scored in the final 30 minute period. The Buffs and Lobos agreed to play another 15 minutes to get in some more practice before the real thing next week. In the extra period, Fatso Williams netted a goal to lead the Lobos to a 4-0 win in their final exhibition of preseason against the West Texas A&M Buffaloes.

New Mexico opens its regular season at home as they host the Lobo Invitational next week, Aug. 18 & 21. The Lobos will play No. 6 Rutgers on Aug. 18 at 7:30 p.m. (MT) at their home field on UNM Soccer Complex.
