by Alma Solis

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico soccer team began their preseason with a 6-0 exhibition match win over Fort Lewis College on Wednesday at Robertson Field/Indoor Facility.

Just three minutes into the match, Paige Satterlee capitalized off a rebound from a block and netted a ball to give the Lobos a 1-0 lead. The Lobos went on to fire off 11 more shots before scoring again in the 25th minute, as Eliza Mariner scored off a turnover.

After the first 30-minute period, the squads moved inside due to weather and waited it out before they ended up playing the last 60 minutes in the indoor facility. It didn’t take long for the Lobos to score again in the second period. On the very first shot they took, Jadyn Edwards gave the Lobos a 3-0 advantage in the 32nd minute. Four shots later, Mercedes Morris netted a goal in the 43rd minute, before Paris Dalton capitalized on a free kick and scored four minutes later in the 47th minute. This would be the last goal of the second period which put New Mexico up 5-0 with 30 minutes left.

The Skyhawks fought for more possession of the ball in the third period, but the Lobos ensured they did not get any chances at the goal. In the 80th minute, Corrine Whitsell scored the sixth and final goal, leading New Mexico to a 6-0 win over Fort Lewis College in the exhibition match.

The Lobos outshot the Skyhawks by 30 shots to none. New Mexico also had three corner kicks to Fort Lewis College’s zero. The Skyhawks were given 12 fouls as the Lobos were given four. Each team had one offside call. Fort Lewis College earned eight goalkeeper saves and New Mexico earned none as they did not allow the Skyhawks to get close enough to firing off any shots.

The Lobos host one more exhibition game this preseason, as they welcome West Texas A&M on Saturday at 1 p.m. After that New Mexico will play host to the Lobo Invitational, opening the season against Rutgers on Aug. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
