Lobo Soccer Selected First in MW Preseason Poll

by Alma Solis

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico soccer team was picked to finish first in the Mountain West Conference for the second year in a row, announced the organization on Wednesday afternoon. The Lobos earned 121 points, including an astonishing 11 first-place votes, meaning every single opposing coach in the conference voted the team for first.

The Lobos were the Mountain West Regular Season and Tournament Champions in the fall 2021 season, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the second season in a row. The squad concluded the season with a 14-5-2 record overall, going 7-2-2 in conference play. Their 14 wins was the second-most wins in program history, breaking many other records along the way. Although New Mexico lost a few key players, most of the starters return for a hopeful 2022 season, along with some strong transfers and newcomers added to the team.

San Diego State trails the Lobos in second place with 100 points. Boise State was picked third with 99 points and a single first-place vote. Fresno State, Utah State and UNLV are predicted to finish fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively. Colorado State was picked to finish seventh, while San José State was picked eighth. Nevada and Wyoming round out the top 10 as they are tied for ninth, while Colorado College is in 11th and Air Force was selected 12th.

The Lobos host one more exhibition game this preseason, as they welcome West Texas A&M on Saturday at 1 p.m. After that New Mexico will play host to the Lobo Invitational, opening the season against Rutgers on Aug. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
