by Frank Mercogliano

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — For the 12th consecutive year, The University of New Mexico had every sport psss the NCAA Academic Progress Rate Institutional Report.  The reports were released publicly by the NCAA.  This year’s report, which is the 2020-21 report, saw 11 of UNM’s 16 sports equal or better last year’s four-year rolling score.

UNM sponsors 18 sports, but for APR purposes, indoor and outdoor track are combined.

The Lobos had four programs record perfect scores of 1,000 in women’s golf, women’s soccer and women’s tennis.  Ten programs out of 16 recorded a perfect 1,000 for the 2020-21 single year; men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s tennis, men’s track and field, women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s soccer, women’s tennis, women’s track and field and women’s volleyball.  The nine perfect single year scores were up from six a year ago.

The highest four-year APR jumps were recorded by men’s tennis, which saw an 11-point improvement to a 990.  On the women’s side, women’s track and field had a six-point improvement to 989.

APR data for the 2020-21 report is a four-year rolling score that include APR data from 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21.

APR is a combination of eligibility and retention scores.  For each semester, a student-athlete can account for two points, one for returning to school, and one for being eligible.   The total points accumulated is divided by the total points possible, and then multiplied by 1000 to get the raw score.

This is the 16th year of that APR scores have been issued.  One of the keys to UNM’s APR success is the Lobo Center for Student-Athlete Success, which houses UNM’s athletic academic advisors, who oversee the academic progress of UNM’s student-athletes.  The LCSAS has three complete computer labs, meeting and private study spaces, classroom, and tutoring stations as well as housing UNM’s Student Success Staff.
