Steeplechase Races Highlight Friday at MW Outdoor Championships

by Alma Solis

CLOVIS, Calif. — The University of New Mexico track & field team ended Friday’s Mountain West Outdoor Championships action with two more podium spots and 14 qualifiers for Saturday’s final rounds in various events. The night was highlighted by a first-place finish by Adva Cohen in the women’s 3000m steeplechase and a second-place finish by Awet Yohannes in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.

Cohen dominated the women’s 3000m steeplechase, finishing more than 20 seconds faster than her competition in the event. Her time of 9:49.32 earned her a top-15 spot on the NCAA Division I national qualifying list, pending approval by TFRRS, in his first steeplechase run this season.

Yohannes ended the night with a second-place finish in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. His time of 8:42.02 is a season and personal best, cutting down more than two seconds. His previous time of 8:44.68 from earlier this season had him ranked at No. 29 on the qualifying list, so this new time gives him more cushion to qualify for the upcoming NCAA Regional, which accepts the top-48 in each event.

On top of these phenomenal podium worthy performances, 14 more ran in qualifying races today and earned the advance to tomorrow’s final rounds in their respective events. Samree Dishon, Stefanie Parsons, Sarah Eckel and Elise Thorner all qualified for the women’s 1500m final set for 5:35 p.m. (PT). Tianna Holmes qualified for the both the final rounds of the 400m dash (6:15 p.m.) and the 200m dash (7:35 p.m.). Abbe Goldstein advances to the 800m final set for 6:55 p.m., while Matthew Larkin advances on the men’s side for the event shortly after at 7:05 p.m. Rivaldo Leacock is the last Lobo to qualify for the final rounds, advancing to the 400m hurdles final set for 7:25 p.m. tomorrow.
