Women's 10K Podium Sweep Highlights First Day of MW OTF Championships

by Alma Solis

CLOVIS, Calif. — The University of New Mexico track & field team opened the Mountain West Outdoor Championships on a fantastic note as the Lobos took the top three spots in the women’s 10K run at the championships. These top podium spots earned the women’s team 24 points towards their team score to tie Colorado State for first.

Samree Dishon led the Lobos as she placed first in the 10K with a time of 33:09.12, which would put her in the top-ten of the NCAA Division I national qualifying list, pending approval by TFRRS. Also, earning a top-ten national ranking, Gracelyn Larkin ran a time of 33:10.09 for second place in the event at the meet. Emma Heckel completed the podium sweep as she finished in third place with a time of 33:13.58 in the event. Heckel had a previous time from earlier in the season of 33:05.02 that puts her at fourth on the qualifying list. With the addition of Dishon and Larkin to the list, this puts five Lobos in the top-15 nationally in just this event.

In the men’s 10K, Kevin Mulcaire was the lone Lobo to compete in the event, running a time of 32:34.22.

The Lobos are back at Veterans Memorial Stadium tomorrow, with both the women’s and men’s long jump events kicking things off at 3 p.m. (PT). Track events begin with the women’s 1500m run at 5 p.m., which will feature a quartet of Lobos including today’s 10K champion Dishon.
