Three Lobos Earn Mountain West Men’s Golf Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –– Three members of the New Mexico men’s golf team were honored as the Mountain West announced the 2022 conference honors and awards. Senior Sam Choi and sophomore Bastien Amat were named to the 10-player All-Mountain West team, while Carson Herron was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year.

Choi becomes a four-time All-Mountain West selection, while Amat was named to the team for the first time. Herron becomes the sixth Lobo to be named Mountain West Freshman of the Year.

Choi had a strong season for the Lobos, highlighted by seven top-5 individual finishes in 12 tournaments this season. He has a scoring average of 70.28 this season, shooting par or better in 25 of his 36 rounds. Most recently he had a T-3rd place finish at the Mountain West Championship. Choi was a three-time Mountain West Golfer of the Week during the year.

Amat’s second collegiate season including two top-5 and four top-10 individual finishes in 12 tournaments. He has a scoring average of 71.83 this season with 21 of 36 rounds at par or better. His best finish was a T-2nd at the Thunderbird Collegiate in April against a highly-ranked field at Arizona State. He earned Mountain West Golfer of the Week for that performance.

Herron becomes the third Lobo in four years to be named Mountain West Freshman of the Year, following Amat last season and Choi in 2019. He had a stroke average of 72.73 this season and had 13 rounds of par or better. Herron had a T-23rd finish at the Mountain West Championship in his tournament debut.

The Lobos will compete in the NCAA Palm Beach Gardens Regional next week at PGA National. The top five finishers will advance from the regional to the NCAA Championships.
