Mountain West Reigning Champion New Mexico Soccer Releases 2022 Schedule

by Alma Solis

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico soccer team is looking forward to another historical season as the Lobos announced their 2022 schedule.

The Lobos had back-to-back phenomenal seasons in 2020 (played in spring 2021) and 2021, which resulted in two straight conference championships, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 10 years.

The team is looking to build on that momentum and success with a home-heavy 2022 schedule, featuring 10 home matches and eight away matches. Fans will notice that this season’s schedule looks a little different as the conference has officially switched to a Thursday/Sunday slate.

The Lobos have 18 matches slated for their fall schedule, beginning with the Lobo Invitational, a four-team tournament hosted on their home pitch at the UNM Soccer Complex. New Mexico opens its schedule with a 7:30 p.m. (MT) matchup against reigning Big 10 Conference runner-up Rutgers on August 18. The team will then face off against CSU-Bakersfield at 1:30 p.m. on August 21.

New Mexico will then travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face Texas Tech on Aug. 28 with a time to be determined. The Lobos will then return home to host Portland State at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 1 and Grand Canyon on Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. The squad concludes their non-conference schedule on the road as they head to UC-San Diego for a 7 p.m. match on Sept. 8 and a matchup against UC-Riverside on Sept. 11 with a time to be determined.

The Lobos open their conference schedule on the road in Laramie, Wyo., facing Wyoming on Sept. 22 at 4 p.m., before heading home for their home conference opener against Colorado State on Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. Soon after, the team hits the road for a weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo., facing Air Force on Sept. 29 at a time to be determined and on Oct. 2 against Colorado College at 1:30 p.m.

New Mexico then hosts a four-game, two weekend homestand, beginning with an Oct. 6 match against Fresno State at 7:30 p.m. The squad then hosts San Jose State on Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. The UNLV Rebels come into town on Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m., before the Lobos close out the extended homestand against Nevada on Oct. 16 at 1 p.m.

The Lobos hit the road for one last away weekend of the regular season, traveling to Boise State on Oct. 20 for a 4 p.m. kickoff and to Utah State on Oct. 23 for a 1 p.m. match. New Mexico closes out the regular season schedule at home, hosting conference rival San Diego State on Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

After being crowned the conference champion the past two seasons, the Lobos earned the right to host the Mountain West Tournament. The conference tournament is set for Nov. 1-5 on the Lobos’ home pitch at the UNM Soccer Complex.
