Lobos Conclude Regular Season Portion of Outdoor Schedule

by Alma Solis

FRESNO, Calif. — The University of New Mexico track & field team concluded regular season outdoor action at the Fresno State Invitational today, earning three qualifying spots and multiple personal bests.

This meet served as good practice for the Lobos as they will head back to Fresno, Calif., in two weeks for the Mountain West Outdoor Championships set for May 12-14 at Fresno State’s home track stadium at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The men’s 4x400m relay team of Victor Akhalu, Jevon O’Bryant, Jovahn Williamson and Rivaldo Leacock broke a stadium record as they ran a time of 3:06.76 to place first in the event. The previous record of 3:08.42 was set and went untouched for 12 years (2010). Their time also moves them up to a qualifying spot at No. 41 on the list.

In the men’s 3000m steeplechase, Awet Yohannes placed first with a time of 8:44.68 in the event at the Fresno meet. His time earns him the No. 25 spot on the NCAA DI National Qualifying List.

In the men’s triple jump, Aidan Quinn earned first place at the meet as he hit a mark of 15.44m. Camillo Dunninger put up a personal best in javelin with a mark of 63.29m for third place at the meet.

Tianna Holmes ran a personal season best in the 400m dash, running a time of 52.68. Her previous best was 52.89, which she ran at the LSU Alumni Gold meet last week. Her new time moves her up a couple spots on the qualifying list to 39th. She also placed first in the meet for the 200m dash, running a time of 23.35 for her season best. This time would put her at No. 65 on the qualifying list for the event.

Next up on the Lobos’ schedule is the Mountain West Outdoor Championships on May 12-14.
