Thorner and Cohen Beat Season Bests at Payton Jordan Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. — Elise Thorner and Adva Cohen put up some impressive times in their respective events at the Payton Jordan Invitational on Friday night, opening up the New Mexico track & field team’s final regular season weekend.

In the women’s 3000m steeplechase, Elise Thorner ran a time of 9:32.42, beating her previous season best of 9:40.98 by more than eight seconds. Her time is already ranked No. 2 on the NCAA DI National Qualifying List, so her new time just gives her more cushion as other student-athletes fight for those qualifying spots.

In the 5000m run, Adva Cohen ran a time of 15:26.48, beating her previous best of 15:29.51 by .03 seconds. She is currently ranked No. 7 on the qualifying list for this event.

The Lobos will continue their final weekend of regular season meets on Saturday at the Fresno State Invitational. The women’s squad will begin competition with Kiara Quezada-Arzate opening the meet up as she competes in pole vault at 10 a.m. (PT). Victoria Plummer will begin high jump shortly after that at 11 a.m. Plummer will also participate in javelin at 10 a.m., 100m hurdles at 1:25 p.m., and shot put at 6 p.m.

Tianna Holmes and Ryan Little are set to compete in the women’s 400m dash at 2:05 p.m. Holmes and Little are also entered to participate in the 200m dash at 4:15 p.m., alongside Mikyla Harkley and Tatyanah Wiley. Harkley is also scheduled for triple jump at 4 p.m. Sarah Eckel, Semira Mebrahtu Firezghi, Abbe Goldstein, Gracelyn Larkin and Stefanie Parsons will run in the 1500 meter run at 6:30 p.m. Samantha Valentine will run in the 3000m steeplechase at 7:45 p.m. Parsons is also set to compete in the 5000m run with Juanita Johnson at 9:45 p.m.

From the men’s squad, Camillo Dunninger is set to open competition with the javelin throw at noon (PT). Dunninger is also competing in 110m hurdles at 1:50 p.m., pole vault at 4 p.m., and shot put at 8 p.m. Darryl Thomas will compete in long jump at 1 p.m. Adam Giron will participate in high jump at 3 p.m. Gavin Sleeter is set to compete in the 800m run at 3:20 p.m.

The sprinting trio of Rivaldo Leacock, Jevon O’Bryant and Jovahn Williamson will run in the 200m dash at 4:30 p.m. The quartet of Victor Akhalu, Leacock, O’Bryant, and Williamson are set to run the 4x400m relay at 5:30 p.m. Aidan Quinn, along with Thomas, are competing in triple jump at 6 p.m. In the 1500m run at 7:05 p.m., Ethan Brouw, Iolo Hughes, Abdirizak Ibrahim and Matthew Larkin are all set to compete. Awet Yohannes will compete in the 3000m steeplechase at 8:15 p.m. Kevin Mulcaire will run in the 5000m run at 10:05 p.m.
