Azkara Named MW Co-Freshman of the Year

by Frank Mercogliano

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Arda Azkara was honored as the Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year, marking the second straight year UNM has picked up the honor and the seventh since becoming a member of the Mountain West.  He was named Co-Freshman of the Year along with Pedro Liborio of Boise State.  UNLV’s Christopher Bulus was named the league’s Player of the Year.

Along with the major end of season honor, Azkara was honored twice more.  He was named to the All-Mountain West singles team, and he was named to the All-Mountain West doubles team along with his partner Nicolas Prieto.  Azkara has played No. 1 singles all season for UNM, and owns a 13-9 overall record including an 8-5 record at No. 1 singles.  In doubles, he and Prieto have moved into the No. 1 doubles slot for UNM.  The honor for Prieto, the teams’ lone senior, was his first career postseason honor.

The Lobos take on Boise State in the Mountain West Tournament quarterfinals later today (Friday) at 11 am.
