Lobo Soccer alum Alexa Kirton signs with Iceland team Stjarnan
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Former University of New Mexico defender Alexa Kirton has officially signed with Stjarnan, a professional soccer team based in Garðabær, Iceland.
Stjarnan competes in Úrvalsdeild kvenna, the top-tier league of women’s soccer in Iceland. The team has won the league to advance to the UEFA Champions League four times, including three times in the past 10 years (2013, 2014 and 2016). Stjarnan also won the Icelandic Cup in 2012, 2014 and 2015, as well as the Icelandic Super Cup in 2012 and 2015.
“I am so grateful to have this opportunity to play overseas and excited to continue my soccer career beyond college,” Kirton said. “Moving to a new country can be scary but I know it will be such an amazing experience and I’ve only heard wonderful things about Iceland. I’m super excited to get back on the field and represent UNM as an alumni on the international level!”
Kirton finished her historical career after breaking the New Mexico program record for most career games played as she played 87 games, a record that had gone untouched since 2013. She contributed over 1000 minutes in four out of her five seasons at UNM. She was named to the All-Mountain West First Team in 2020 and on the Second Team in 2019 and 2021. She also earned All-MW Tournament selection in 2021, after aiding the Lobos to their second MW Championship in a row.
The Sammamish, Wash., native was a vital part of two historical Lobo teams in the spring of 2021 and the fall of 2021. During this time, the Lobos advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both seasons. In the spring 2021 campaign, New Mexico advanced to the second round of NCAA’s for the first time in program history. The Lobos also broke many team records as they went on an eight-game winning streak in the fall of 2021 and a nine-game conference winning streak that spanned from the spring to the fall season in 2021.
As a Lobo, she also exceled off the pitch as she earned Mountain West Scholar-Athlete in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. She also earned Mountain West All-Academic Team honors in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
