Lobos Host SJSU, Fresno State on Senior Weekend

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Myu Kagayama, Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang and Yue Lin “Polly” Chen will look to end their home careers on a high note as the Lobos will host San José State on Friday at 1:30 pm and then Fresno State on Saturday at 11 am, with both matches at McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium.  The matches are part of a doubleheader pod weekend with Air Force playing Fresno State Friday at 10 am and San José State on Saturday at 2:30 pm.

The matches are a part of a big spring sports weekend as both Lobo Softball and Lobo Baseball are also hosting Mountain West games all weekend as well.  On Saturday, there will be a free LoboFest area with inflatables for kids and an Easter Egg hunt.  Parents should bring a bag or basket for the Easter Egg hunt for each child, and the Easter Egg hunt will take place after both the 10:30 am baseball game and the 11 am softball game in the outfield of both fields.  Due to the baseball and softball games on Saturday, there is an admission price to enter the complex.

As for the tennis, the Lobos enter Friday’s match having successfully ended a seven-match losing streak, winning 4-0 over Utah State on the road last Sunday.  That win was UNM’s first in conference play, and now the 10-8 Lobos will look for a second straight against San José State, which is 5-11 overall and 1-5 in the Mountain West.  Fresno State is a different animal though.  The red-hot Bulldogs are ranked No. 60 overall, and they are 16-3 overall and 6-0 in the Mountain West and they are the league’s lone unbeaten team.

The Lobos will officially honor Myu Kageyama prior to Saturday’s match, as both Huang and Chen were honored in 2021 as seniors, although both elected to utilize their extra COVID seasons.  Both matches will be livestreamed as well at www.golobos.com/watchtennis
