Lobos to Host Lopes in WNIT First Round Wednesday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— After earning an automatic qualifier bid to the WNIT, New Mexico has drawn Grand Canyon in the 64-team bracket and will face the Lopes on Wednesday, March 16 at 7 p.m. MT in The Pit.

UNM (24-9, 14-4 MW) was one of four Mountain West teams to make the postseason tournament, but earned the automatic bid as the highest finisher in the regular season. Of the 64 teams, 32 teams received automatic berths and 32 received at-large selections.

It will be the fourth time in five years that New Mexico has played in the WNIT and the ninth time in program history playing in the WNIT.

The field consists of 32 teams that won at least 20 games this season, including GCU who enters the postseason 22-9 and went 14-4 in the WAC, finishing second in the conference. The Lopes advanced to the WAC championship game, falling 74-57 to Stephen F. Austin after beating California Baptist 64-60 in the semifinal.

The first round will begin Wednesday and concludes Friday with the second round taking place March 19-22. The WNIT championship is slated for April 2.
