by Frank Mercogliano

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — UNM played well but came out on the short side of a few close matches and fell to Santa Clara 6-1, ending UNM’s six-match winning streak.  The Lobos, who face San Francisco on Monday, are now 9-2 on the season, and Santa Clara is 5-4.

UNM dropped the doubles point 2-0, ending a team-wide eight match winning streak in doubles.  That put UNM behind 1-0, and Santa Clara took the first three matches to officially clinch the victory. UNM had its shots in the match, but only Myu Kageyama was able to come out on top, winning a thrilling match 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 1-0 (11-9).  Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang fell in the tiebreak, losing 7-5, 4-6 1-0 (10-4) and Satoho Toriumi lost closely 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

Kageyama’s win extended her winning streak to six straight matches.
