Lobos Sweep in Colorado to Stay Perfect
COLORADO SPRINGS/PUEBLO, Colo. — The New Mexico Lobo women’s tennis team got four wins from Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang and Myu Kageyama as the squad swept Metro State and CSU Pueblo, winning 5-2 over Metro State in a morning match, and then driving over to Pueblo and winning 5-0 there. The two wins pushed the Lobos to a perfect 3-0 on the season as the team now will prep for its home opener on Friday against Northern Arizona.
UNM won all six doubles matches to move to 9-0 in doubles for the Spring season. The Lobos took the opening match winning the first four singles matches. Maria Sodre, inserted into the singles lineup after just playing doubles yesterday, won 6-2, 6-0, and she was followed by Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Myu Kageyama clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, and Hsuan Huang got a fifth point with a 6-1, 6-1 win.
After singles finished up, the team quickly hopped into the team bus and headed to CSU Pueblo, where the squad took a 5-0 victory. Again, UNM won all three doubles matches, losing just two games. From there, the Lobos rolled. Kageyama, Sarah O’Connor and Albie Huang all won 6-0, 6-0 to clinch the victory, and Yue Lin “Polly” Chen won at No. 1 6-2, 6-1. With that, the match ended despite Hsuan Huang leading 5-0 and Sodre leading 2-0. Overall, UNM took 73 of the 78 games played in the match.
NOTES: New Mexico’s nine doubles wins on the weekend nearly doubled the entire Fall season total of 11 … Kageyama’s two wins in singles gave her a team-high 12 … Maria Sodre won her first singles match of her career.
