Ibrahim Sets New School Record, Lobo Track & Field Distance Runners Open Indoor Season
BOSTON – The New Mexico Lobo track and field team opened the indoor season with an outstanding showing in distance events at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, hosted by Boston University, on Saturday.
In his first indoor event as a Lobo, Abdirizak Ibrahim set a new school record in the indoor 5000-meter event with a time of 13:32.78. This record went untouched for nearly eight years. The previous record of 13:34.54 which Luke Caldwell set on March 14, 2014.
Three Lobos set records for their respective countries, as well. Adva Cohen already owned the top spot in the indoor 5000m event amongst Israeli-born runners, but in today’s meet, she ran a time of 15:33, beating her previous record of 15:42.85 by nine seconds. In her first collegiate indoor event, freshman Emma Heckel set the under-20 German record by nearly a whole minute with a time of 15:41.07. The previous record was a time of 16:37.45, which Tatjana Shulte recorded on Feb. 12, 2016. Andrea Modin Engesaeth topped things off as she recorded the best indoor 5000m time in Norwegian history. She ran a time of 16:00.99 in her first indoor event, defeating the previous Norwegian record of 16:12.28, set by Siri Merete Alfheim on March 8, 2002.
Gracelyn Larkin found herself in the top-10 in the event as well in Canadian history, earning the No. 7 spot on the list with a time of 15:41.17. Amelia Mazza-Downie earned a 16:08.70 time in her first indoor event. Stefanie Parsons, a transfer from Edinboro (Pa.), ran a time of 16:25.51. Her best time in the event while competing at Edinboro was 17:30.45, beating that time by over a minute.
Annamaria Kostarellis, a transfer from Xavier (Ohio), found a time of 16:34.89 in her first indoor event as a Lobo. In her first collegiate indoor event, Samree Dishon earned a time of 16:39.05. Juanita Johnson recorded a time of 16:43.90 in her first indoor 5000m.
In the 3000m event, Elise Thorner ran a time of 9:28.19, her first time running the event in indoor. Two Lobos ran unattached in the 5000-meter as Hannah Miller recorded a time of 15:41.28 and Abbe Goldstein recorded a 16:00.62 time.
The Lobos are scheduled to resume indoor season in January as they host four meets from the end of January through the beginning of February.
