PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team opened play Monday at the Saint Mary’s Invitational, held at Poppy Hills Golf Club. The Lobos shot even par during the first round and are in ninth place after 18 holes.

Stanford holds the first-round lead at 15-under, followed by San Francisco at 7-under and Santa Clara and Oregon at 4-under.

“It wasn’t a bad start for us,” said head coach Glen Millican. “We had good rounds from Sam and Matt, along with Brandon hanging in there after a rough start on No. 10. We are looking forward to the final two rounds.”

Sam Choi was the low Lobo on Monday, posting a 4-under 67 to finish the day T-7th on the individual leaderboard. Matthew Watkins also shot in red figures, posting a 2-under 69 to also stand T-12th. Brandon Shong bounced back from a triple-bogey on his first hole of the day to shoot 1-under the rest of the day and finish at 2-over. Bastien Amat shot 4-over and Albert Boneta shot 5-over to round out the lineup, while Ignacio Arcaya shot 4-over while playing as an individual.

The tournament continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday at Poppy Hills.
