UNM Hosts Eastern New Mexico Thursday for Final Exhibition

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— With an exhibition already completed, the New Mexico women’s basketball team hosts Eastern New Mexico in its final tune-up on Thursday before the regular season begins next Tuesday.

Thursday’s start time against the Greyhounds is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Pit and will be the ninth meeting all-time between the two programs, with the Lobos holding a 6-2 advantage in the series.

In their first appearance of the season, the Lobos defeated Western Colorado 94-53 behind four players in double figures. LaTora Duff and Shaiquel McGruder each finished with 16 points to lead all scorers, followed by Jaedyn De La Cerda at 13, and a perfect 4-for-4 shooting from three-point range for freshman Vianè Cumber for 12 points. McGruder was one rebound shy of a double-double, while also accounting for two of UNM’s five blocks in the game.

All 12 available players entered the game throughout the exhibition and found their way on the stat sheet in some capacity, including seven points and two steals for Mackenzie Curtis, five points, a block and a steal for Rebeka Renczes, two points and an assist for Zeyno Seren, and four points and five rebounds from Aniyah Augmon in their first collegiate action.

The Lobo defense had a strong outing as well, holding the Mountaineers scoreless from three-point range and to 27.6 percent shooting from the floor through the first two quarters.

Like the Lobos, the Greyhounds have had one exhibition as well, falling 84-25 at Arizona on Oct. 28.

Kamirah Decker led the team with eight points on 4-for-6 shooting and added three rebounds, with Laura Rowe adding seven points and four rebounds in the game. Iyanna McCurdy recorded a team-high five rebounds.

As a team, Eastern New Mexico shot 18.8 percent from the floor and 25.0 percent from beyond the arc.
