New Mexico Begins Play at Jim West Challenge

by Steve Kirkland

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The New Mexico women’s golf team opened play Sunday at Jim West Challenge, hosted by Texas State at the Kissing Tree Golf Club. The Lobos finished the opening day of the tournament tied for 13th place at 19-over.

New Mexico shot 10-over in the first round before shooting 9-over in the second round. Oklahoma State is leading the event at 29-under, followed by TCU at 19-under and Florida State at 15-under.

“We can’t keep having only two or three players show up each round,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We put ourselves behind the 8-ball and make it more difficult to move up the leaderboard. The competition here is stiff and we need to be better with our course management tomorrow.”

Jenny Lertsadwattana is the only Lobo in red figures through 36 holes, posting rounds of 73 and 70 to finish the day at 1-under. Serena Chon shot rounds of 73 and 75 to stand at 4-over, while Myah McDonald is at 7-over after rounds of 71 and 78. Lauren Lehigh is at 9-over and Kamie Hamada is at 19-over to round out the lineup.

Play will conclude Monday at the Kissing Tree Golf Club beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT. Fans can follow the tournament on Golfstat and watch on ESPN+.
