Day One of Utah Invite in the Books
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The University of New Mexico took four of six singles matches from Utah State to cap off the opening day of the Utah Invitational.
In singles, UNM was paired with Utah State while the team faced off with Utah in doubles. In singles, UNM got wins from Yue Lin “Polly” Chen, Hsaun Huang, Myu Kagayama and Satori Toriumi, winning matches at flights 1, 2, 3 and 6 respectively. Chen took down Carolina Millan 6-2, 6-2 while Hunag picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lisa Kung. At No. 3, Kageyama won a three-set match against 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 over Gabrielle Dekker. Toriumi won at No. 6, also in a comeback of three sets, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 over Brooke Demerath.
Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang lost 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 2-6 to Annaliese County at No. 4 and Sarah O’Connon lost 5-7, 2-6 against Zeynep Naz Ozturk at No. 5.
Doubles didn’t go as well as UNM lost all three matches, with Chen and Kageyamam falling 8-3 at No. 1, Albie and Toriumi lost 8-2 at No. 2 and Hsuan Huang and O’Connor lost 8-4 at No. 3, as UNM took on Utah.
The Lobos will face Weber State in doubles on Saturday and Utah in singles as well.
