Lobos Add Catcher Janae Cameron

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The University of New Mexico softball program has added catcher Janae Cameron to the roster, as announced by head coach Paula Congleton.

“We are very excited to have Janae join our Lobo family,” Congleton stated. “She will bring experience behind the dish and another powerful bat to our lineup.”

The new Lobo will join the team at the semester break and will be a senior.

Cameron comes to UNM from the University of Nebraska Omaha after having spent the last three seasons with the Mavericks. The Windsor, Colo., native started in 85 games while playing in 98, and has accumulated 57 hits, 13 doubles, six home runs, 26 walks, 34 RBI with a career batting average of .264, a career slugging percentage of .407 and a .346 on-base percentage.

In her last year at Omaha, she appeared in 30 games, making 18 starts at catcher while hitting .268 on the year with 15 hits, including two doubles and two home runs.

As a sophomore, she started 22 games and hit .333 with 19 hits, six doubles, two home runs and 14 RBI, as well as a .544 slugging percentage and .406 on-base percentage. At the conclusion of her sophomore season, Cameron ranked second in the Summit League in doubles and eighth in RBI and was named to the Summit League’s Academic Honor Roll.

During her freshman year, she competed in 46 games with 45 starts and hit .223 with 23 hits, five doubles, two home runs and 15 RBI.

“The culture that Coach Congleton and her staff have built at UNM is exciting, and something I knew I wanted to be a part of from our first conversation,” Cameron noted on her decision to join the program. “The emphasis on working hard and always putting the team first fit the type of environment I knew I’d be able to thrive in. I couldn’t be more excited to be a Lobo.”
