by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —UNM finishes off both a three-match road swing and the 2021 non-conference season with a Rio Grande Rivalry matchup with New Mexico State. The match will be played for the first time in Las Cruces under the lights.

The Lobos enter the match with a 4-2-0 record and a three-match winning streak. The Lobos have wins over Washington (2-1), Northern Arizona (6-2) and Grand Canyon (2-0). The final two wins gave the Lobos the title of the GCU Classic.

The wins were spearheaded by Jadyn Edwards, who scored three goals and added an assist on the game-winning goal against Grand Canyon. She earned Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week honors, the second straight week that a Lobo was honored by the league after goalkeeper Emily Johnson was Defensive Player of the Week.

UNM is 9-1-0 all-time against New Mexico State, allowing just two goals over the 10 games. The Lobos have won the last two meetings in the series, and both were by 1-0 scores. The last four meetings in Las Cruces have all ended in 1-0 scorelines, with UNM winning three of those.

After this match, UNM will return to the UNM Soccer Complex to open its Mountain West title defense. The Lobos will host Wyoming on Friday, September 24 at 7:30 pm.
