Lobos in Third After First Day of Branch/McGuire

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico women’s golf team is in third place after the opening day of the 43rd Annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the UNM Championship Course. The Lobos shot an even par first round and a 1-over second round to enter the final round at 1-over, six shots off the lead.

San Jose State leads the tournament at 5-under, followed by San Diego State at 3-under. The Lobos are third at 1-over, while BYU (+2) and Oregon State (+3) round out the top five.

“I think everybody played really solid today,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We left a few shots out there on the back nine of the second round, but they were able to bring it back and played really tough. To be 1-over after all the work they have done is a good position. We will have to be under par tomorrow and this team is capable of doing that.”

Jenny Lertsadwattana led the Lobos on the opening day, shooting rounds of 69 and 72 to finish the day ninth on the individual leaderboard at 3-under. Lauren Lehigh posted consecutive even par rounds of 72 while Myah McDonald is 1-over after rounds of 73 and 72. Tiana Cruz posted rounds of 74 and 73 and Chloe Lauer rounded out the lineup with rounds of 79 and 77.

Seven Lobos are playing the event as individuals, led by Caroline Jansson, who is 3-over after rounds of 74 and 73. Lisa-Marie Pagliano is at 5-over and Annie Saechueng is at 6-over as New Mexico had the three best scores of the individual players.

The final round will be Tuesday with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com and admission is free.
