Lobos Take GCU Tourney Title with 2-0 Win Over 'Lopes

by Frank Mercogliano

PHOENIX, Ariz. —Madi Hirschman and Zaria Katesigwa both scored in the first 17 minutes of the game, and that’s all UNM needed as Emily Johnson recorded UNM’s first shutout of the season and the Lobos won the GCU Tournament with a 2-0 win over the homestanding ‘Lopes.  UNM went 2-0 in the tournament, also winning 6-2 on Thursday night against Northern Arizona.  Both GCU and Denver went 1-1, and Northern Arizona went 0-2.

Johnson made four saves in recording the shutout, and she picked up her first one just 17 seconds into the game.  Her final one was her best save of the night, handling a low, hard shot from Gianna Gourley with just over eight minutes on the clock, but Johnson was able to get low and smother the shot, preserving the shutout.

UNM got on the board in the 12th minute off a corner kick.  Maysa Walters sent a ball in, and it ended up on the head of Jadyn Edwards, who sent it to Karlee Maes.  From there, she sent a shot on net, but it went right to Hirschman, who settled it and poked it in off the far post for the 1-0 lead.  Just five minutes later UNM made it 2-0 when Alexa Kirton picked off a pass at midfield and sent a long ball forward that Zaria Katesigwa raced to get. She collided with two ‘Lopes as she got a piece of it, chipping keeper Jordan Ferguson, who eventually got a piece of the ball, but not enough of it to stop it from trickling over the line.

UNM outshot Grand Canyon 14-12, and 8-4 on net.  The Lobos will take their three-match winning streak to Las Cruces next Thursday night as the squad takes on New Mexico State at 7 p.m.
