Men’s Golf Opens Play at Maui Jim Intercollegiate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The New Mexico men’s golf team began its 2021-22 season Friday as the Maui Jim Intercollegiate began at the Mirabel Golf Club. The Lobos shot 4-over during the first round and are tied for 10th place after 18 holes of play.

Sam Choi led UNM during the opening round, shooting a 2-under 68 to place in the top 20 of the individual leaderboard. Bastien Amat shot an even-par round of 70 while Matthew Watkins and Carson Herron each shot 3-over 73 to complete the scoring four for the Lobos. Albert Boneta rounded out the lineup with a 4-over 74, while Brandon Shong shot an even-par while competing as an individual.

“It was good to finally get the season underway,” said head coach Glen Millican. “We didn’t play our best, but we had a couple birdies coming in that helped. Sam and Bastien had nice rounds to lead us today.”

Georgia Tech is the first-round leader at 16-under, followed by Clemson at 14-under and Auburn at 9-under.

The second round of the event is scheduled for Saturday and the final round will be Sunday at the Mirabel Golf Club. Live scoring of the event is available on Golfstat.com.
