Men's Basketball Announces 2021-22 Non-Conference Schedule
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s basketball team announced its 2021-22 non-conference schedule on Friday, September 10. Combined with the Mountain West schedule, announced last month, the Lobos will play 19 home games at The Pit this season.
The non-conference schedule is highlighted by the return of the annual home-and-home series with New Mexico State, home games against UTEP and SMU, a visit to Colorado and two games in the Las Vegas Classic.
The debut of the Richard Pitino era of Lobo basketball comes on Nov. 5 as UNM hosts New Mexico Highlands in an exhibition. The regular season opens a week later when the Lobos play FAU on Nov. 10 before they visit Colorado on Nov. 13 in their first road game of the season.
A three-game homestand against Grambling State, Montana State and Western New Mexico leads into the Las Vegas Classic at the Orleans Arena. The Lobos will play UAB on Thanksgiving in the first game of the tournament before playing either San Francisco or Towson the following day.
New Mexico and New Mexico State resume their rivalry with games on Nov. 30 in Las Cruces and Dec. 6 in Albuquerque. Due to the pandemic, last season snapped a streak of 59 straight years that the teams played home-and-away, dating back to 1961-62. The schools had met every year on the hardwood dating back to 1943-44 prior to last season.
The home game against the Aggies begins a six-game December homestand that ends with the Mountain West opener vs. Colorado State. The Lobos host Denver on Dec. 9 before UTEP makes its first appearance at The Pit in three seasons on Dec. 12. The non-conference schedule concludes with home games on Dec. 19 against SMU and Dec. 21 against reigning MEAC Champion Norfolk State.
The Mountain West schedule was announced last month with home games against Colorado State, Utah State, San Diego State, Fresno State, San Jose State, Boise State, Wyoming, Air Force and UNLV.
Tip-off times and TV designations for all games, both conference and non-conference, will be announced at a later date.
Fans can renew their season tickets right now, online at www.golobos.com/tickets to lock in their seats for all 19 home games of the 2021-22 season.
NOTES: The schedule includes two first-time opponents in FAU and Norfolk State … The six-game homestand in December is the Lobos’ longest since a six-game homestand in November of 2007 … This season marks the first time since 1957-58 that the Lobos will play the entire month of December at home.
