Chen, Munday, Huang Named All-MW

by Frank Mercogliano

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Yue Lin “Polly” Chen was named All-Mountain West in singles and the team of Natasha Munday and Hsuan Huang were named All-Mountain West in doubles as each earned their first career postseason awards.

The Lobos had at least three all-conference honorees in four of the last six years.

Chen played No. 1 singles for UNM for the first time in her career, and she went 6-7 on the year.  Her biggest wins came in a clinching match in a tiebreaker over UTEP in a 4-3 win and a comeback three-set win over Air Force’s Meredith Jones.  Although a senior, Chen plans to return to the squad in 2021-22 as she has an extra COVID senior season available.

The doubles tandem of Munday and Huang played No. 1 doubles all season, going 9-4 overall and 5-4 in conference play.  The pair didn’t start playing together full time until the first week of March, and the duo won its first five matches and then three of its last four.  UNM secured the doubles point in nine of the 13 matches that they played No. 1.

The honor was a career capper for Munday, who was celebrated on Senior Day, and for Huang, it was her first.  Huang was one of three freshmen on the roster for UNM in 2021.
