Women's Tennis Edged 4-3 by Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — New Mexico took the doubles point and then got a nice comeback at No. 1 singles, but Air Force had just enough firepower to edge out the Lobos 4-3, UNM’s first 4-3 loss of the season after going 3-0 in such matches.  UNM stays in Colorado Springs to take on San Jose State at 10 a.m. in a neutral site match.

The Lobos swept the doubles point with wins at No. 1 doubles by Natasha Munday and Hsuan Huang 6-4 and at No. 3 doubles by Hsiang-Wen “Albie” Huang and Satoho Toriumi 6-3.  UNM then went up 2-0 when Myu Kageyama took a relatively easy 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, but UNM struggled from there.  Air Force took three straight, including a win at No. 6 singles over Sara Kuuttila-Webbert, making her season debut for UNM.

Those three gave Air Force a 3-2, and it looked like they could get a clinch at No. 1 singles but Yue Lin “Polly” Chen had other ideas.  Chen dropped her first set 6-1 and was down 4-2, just six points from defeat, but she went on a tear.  She won the final four games of that set to even things up, and then she got a late break to win 7-5, tying the match at 3-3.  However, the comeback wasn’t in the cards as Mebeli Becerra defeated Albie Huang 6-2, 6-4 to close it out.
