Lobos Dominate Wyoming 3-1, Maly Posts Five Points on Senior Night

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team had a lot to celebrate tonight as they honored its six seniors on the squad for senior night and also posted a dominant 3-1 win over the Wyoming Cowgirls (2-6, 2-6 MW) at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos (8-1, 8-1 MW) were led by redshirt senior Gwen Maly, who had a foot in every UNM goal on the evening, tallying two goals and an assist for a total of five points on the night.

“I think anytime that you can win on senior night, it makes a win that much more special because you send six really amazing members of our program out the right way,” said head coach Heather Dyche.

The first goal of the night for the Lobos came in the 53rd minute as Gwen Maly brought the ball to the left side of the box, as junior Karlee Maes made her way around two defenders on the inside. Maly saw this as a scoring opportunity, sliding the ball to the awaiting Maes, who immediately directed a shot to the top left corner of the net.

It was offensive rapid-fire from there for the Lobos as Maly scored a goal of her own in the 56th minute. A few Lobos passed the ball before senior Madi Hirschman found Maly at the top of the box. Maly missed her first swing at the ball but delivered on her second as it made it past the defender’s reach, giving the Lobos a 2-0 advantage.

Then in the 66th minute, Maly scored again, this time from a long pass from Maes inside the box. Junior Jadyn Edwards was in the air in an attempt to head the ball into the net, but it fell just behind her. Maly was there to cover and scored her second goal of the night with ease as the ball bounced right to her, allowing her to deliver it for a goal immediately.

Wyoming did attempt to make a comeback in the 68th minute, scoring its first goal of the night, but all attempts were cut short by the Lobos. The team was an offensive powerhouse, posting 17 shots, seven being on goal. The Lobo defense held the Cowgirls to just five shots, with just two being on goal.

Maly has now tallied a total of 19 points on the season, which is tied for 10th in points per season in program history. Dani Rangel tallied 19 points in the 1997 season. Maly’s eight goals on the season is tied for ninth in the UNM record book for goals in a season. The last time a Lobo scored eight goals in a season was Jessie Hix in 2017.

The Lobos will now close out the regular season at home as they host Colorado State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Visit the UNM Women’s Soccer schedule page for information on how to keep up with the match.
