Lobos Continue Winning Ways With 2-0 Shutout Over Air Force

by Sofia M. Lucero

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team got back to its winning ways, posting a 2-0 shutout over Air Force (2-5, 2-5 MW) in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday. The Lobos (6-1, 6-1 MW) have shutout five of seven opponents faced and currently outscore opposing teams 19-2.

“We really wanted to respond after a tough loss last weekend,” said head coach Heather Dyche. “The players collectively found a way to get a win over a very hard-fighting Air Force team. I am proud of them today.”

Senior Alexa Kirton scored her first goal of the season in the 21st minute of the match. A scramble in the box led to redshirt-senior Gwen Maly passing the ball out to redshirt-junior Cami Floth. Floth quickly got the ball to the incoming Kirton, and before the Falcons defense could respond, the ball was in the back of the net.

The Lobos’ second goal came in the 68th minute, as freshman Brynn Boeyink got the ball to junior Alesia Garcia. Garcia dribbled to the top of the box before juking out three Falcon defenders. The junior then launched the ball in off her left foot and delivered it past the diving goalie, giving the Lobos a 2-0 lead. Garcia is now tied with Maly atop the Mountain West in goals scored (6).

The Lobos were a powerhouse on offense, sending in 16 shots, eight on goal. The team turned it up in the second half, forcing a total of five saves from the Falcons in the second 45′ alone. Defensively, the Lobos kept the Falcons at bay, allowing just seven shots, only three being on goal.

The Lobos have now shutout the Falcons twice this season, previously posting a 4-0 win at home on March 21.

The Lobos will now remain in Colorado Springs to face Colorado College on Sunday at 12 p.m. MT. The Tigers are currently second in the Mountain division, garnering a 4-1-1 record on the season. The Tigers’ one loss was handed to them by UNM in a record-breaking 5-0 shutout in Albuquerque earlier this season.
