UNM to Play in WNIT, Faces California Baptist in First Round

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The season continues for The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team in the WNIT.

Entering postseason play with a 15-4 record and as the Mountain West regular season champions, the Lobos are set to face California Baptist (24-0) out of the WAC in the first round in the Fort Worth region. The first round game is set for Friday, March 19 at 8 p.m. CT/ 7 p.m. MT.

In the Lobos’ portion of the bracket are San Francisco (15-10) out of the West Coast Conference and Houston (16-7) out of the American, with Arizona State, Rice, Fresno State and Missouri as the other teams in the region.

Statistically, UNM is one of the top teams in the field, entering as the 10th-best scoring offense, averaging 81.0 points per game, third in made threes per game (10.3) and eighth in assist/turnover ratio. Additionally, the Lobos are 21st in scoring margin (13.6), 18th in assists per game (16.7) and 28th in field-goal percentage (.450).

There are a total of 32 teams in the WNIT with eight teams at each of the four sites. Each team will be guaranteed to play two games at each site and there will be an eight-team championship bracket at each location, and a four-team consolation bracket at each site.

The selection marks UNM’s eighth appearance in the postseason WNIT, with the last time occurring in 2019.
