Lobos Shutout Utah State 3-0 in Home Opener

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It had been 498 days since the University of New Mexico women’s soccer team played a game on their home field, and just like they did on Nov. 1, 2019; the Lobos posted a shutout win. This time, the Lobos (3-0, 3-0) shutout Utah State (0-3, 0-3) in a 3-0 thriller at the UNM Soccer Complex.

The Lobos posted their first goal of the night in the 49th minute off a free-kick opportunity for the Lobos. Junior Jadyn Edwards, taking the free kick, launched the ball through a sea of players and made it through to the back of the net for the Lobos’ first goal of the game.

The momentum of the match continued to be in New Mexico’s favor as senior Madi Hirschman dribbled the ball towards the Aggie goal, pulling the goalkeeper off the net in the 65th minute. The senior saw this as a scoring opportunity and kicked the ball past the goalie, increasing the Lobo lead to 2-0.

Redshirt-senior Gwen Maly continued her scoring streak in the last 30 seconds of the match as she stunned the goalie in the box and scored her third goal of the season. This was the last major action of the game, completing the 3-0 shutout for the Lobos.

The Lobos shutout the Aggies almost completely, allowing just one shot in the entire match. The Lobos ended the game with 17 shots, nine being on goal.

Posting their third win in a row, this is the best start for the Lobos since the 2009 season, where the team finished with an overall record of 13-5-3.

The Lobos look to continue their undefeated streak this Friday versus Colorado College at the UNM Soccer Complex. The game will start at 7:30 p.m., and fans will be allowed at a limited capacity.
