First-Half Goal Enough to Take Down Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. — The University of New Mexico’s Gwen Maly scored in the first half of the women’s soccer team’s match versus Wyoming. The goal was enough to overwhelm the Cowgirls, improving the Lobos to 2-0 on the season.

The redshirt senior’s goal came in the 33rd minute after the Cowgirls attempted to clear the ball from scoring position. Rather, the ball was kicked just in front of Maly and left unattended, which allowed her enough time to gather a shot and deliver it past the goalie.

The Lobo offense applied extensive pressure throughout the game, taking 13 shots, with 10 on goal. An example of this offensive power is when Alesia Garcia, in the 57th minute, dribbled the ball to the right side of the goal. The junior then juked a defender and hammered the ball towards the net. The ball was saved but was recovered by Garcia and put back in play.

Garcia and senior Leilani Baker both fired off five shots each in the game, three and four of the shots being on goal, respectively. Maly finished the game with three shots, all on goal and one goal in 41 minutes.

The Lobo defense kept the Cowgirls at bay, allowing only three shots with none on goal.

The Lobos now improve to 2-0 on the season and return to New Mexico for their home-opener versus Utah State on March 13. The game is set to take place at 6:30 p.m., and fans will be allowed at a limited capacity.
