Lobos Finish Top-Five In Eleven Events at UNLV Spring Opener

LAS VEGAS, NEV. — The University of New Mexico track and field team showed up in full-force at the UNLV Spring Opener in Las Vegas, Nev. The Lobos claimed first place in four events, earning a total of 15 top-5 finishes throughout the day.

The Lobos got their four wins from Carlos Salcido in the men’s 400m (47.73), Steffi Jones in the women’s 800m (2:12.15), Jay Griffin in the men’s 200m (20.82), and the men’s 4x400m team (Carlos Salcido, Jay Griffin, Montez Wright and Gavin Sleeter, 3:17.44).

The women’s 4x400m team, consisting of Jones, Tianna Holmes, Alexandria Ruth, and Ryan little, finished in second place in the event, posting a time of 3:47.12. Also finishing in second place on the day was Alyssa Magallanez in the women’s high jump (1.62m) and Shannon Fritz in the women’s pole jump (3.65m).

Kiara Quezada-Arzate participated in the women’s pole jump and placed third (3.50m). Sophomore Tianna Holmes and freshman Ryan Little finished third and fourth in the women’s 200m at a time of 23.79 and 24.04, respectively. Emily Ho also ran in the race, finishing at a mark of 28.60 and in 36th place overall.

In addition to Magallanez in the women’s high jump, Victoria Plummer finished in third (1.57m), Emily Ho in fifth place (1.47m), and Ada’ora Chigbo and Jamari Drake in T6th and T9th respectively (1.42m).

Montez Wright ran in the men’s 100m, finishing in third place at a time of 10.71. Also in third place was Charlotte Prouse in the women’s 1500m, finishing at a mark of 4:39.30.

Darryl Thomas finished in fourth place in the men’s long jump at a mark of 6.46m. Rounding out the group was Alexandria Ruth in the women’s 400m (1:00.54, 10th place), and Emily Ho in the women’s long jump (4.70m, 20th).
